about
We've all been there. At some point in your life, someone close to you perishes. Sometimes physically, and sometimes in an equally distressing figurative sense through their actions toward you. Sometimes you try and be the bigger person and work through your issues. Sometimes the shield of ice they've erected around your tender and compassionate heart is impenetrable, even when they try do that thing with their tongue that was frankly the only thing that kept you holding on til now.
Thankfully Tāmaki Makaurau eletroclash collective Hoisin Sauce have documented this experience in the form ‘U Licky’, their latest club-thumping single. The lyrical themes of the track explores infidelity, jealousy and failed attempts at moving forward and are juxtaposed musically by the upbeat, breakbeat-driven two-minutes-forty-ish musical tomfoolery. Their signature irreverent and ever-changing beat wizardry morphs around the lamenting tale with a liveliness which belies the emotional weight of the subject matter. In a world in the midst of celebrating the achievements in empowerment of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, there is no WAP here - only cold, jaded contempt for ex-lovers.
